Dragon Con.

Living in the Atl., if you plan to go to a convention, Dragon Con is your best bet. Assuming of course, you don’t want to travel far. I originally wasn’t planning to go, but thought it might provide a good chance to network a little, and see some of the creators that I admire. Both of which I managed to accomplish.

I went on Sunday, and brought some flyers that I had printed out. The trip started out pretty interesting when a young man hopped on the train. He walked up and down asking people to match the folded dollar he had in his hand. My first thought, obviously, was to hire this guy to hand out flyers for me. He was really working it, and I’d imagine that his tenaciousness would serve him well in an actual job. But, it was Sunday. Perhaps he needed money to gas his car for work on Tuesday.  The most interesting thing about this guy was the fact he was dressed way better than me.  I’m no slob (I had on a new T-shirt and denim shorts), but this guy was dressed impressively with matching yellow and white gear that put what most of the passangers had on to shame.

That was almost the highlight of the trip until we got to the celebrities section. Dragon Con is spread across about 3-4 hotels in downtown Atlanta, so finding anything was pretty hard.  Navigating within the convention, was like navigating in Atlanta traffic. Just replace the pick-ups and BMWs with low budget costume designers. Once we found the celebrities, I noticed one that caught my attention. The cheerleader from Heros? No. Patty Duke’s son? Nope. Micky from the Monkees? Bingo.

Hey, I never claimed to be cool. And when I was young, I was never really into music, but was a big fan of Nickelodeon. One of the first shows I got into was the “Monkees”. I was a fan of all four guys when I was 8-11, not realizing the show had run its course 10-20 years before I made my premiere in New York. Well, I was on a budget, so below is one of the three things I purchased. I don’t take many photos, so I hope you like.

I’m the short one on the right, by the way.

So, as for my other 2 purchases, I picked up Volume 3 and 4 of Least I Could Do. Writer Ryan Sohmer and artist Lar Desouza were nice enough to not only sign/sketch in both copies, but they also allowed me to talk shop for a couple minutes. I only stayed at Dragon Con for the one day, but all in all, it was a very rewarding experience.  I look forward to a year or two down the line where some of you can visit me at the other side of the table.

If anybody reading this is visiting the site for the first time, or you picked up one of my flyers at the Convention, let me be the first to welcome you to STC. Feel free to leave a comment below, and I’ll be sure to respond. A new strip is out Thursday, so talk to you guys then. If not sooner. Peace.
